Frequently Asked Questions
Over the past twenty-one years, Joe Collins and Michelle Anciello have built OpinionArchives, a landmark database of many of America’s most influential magazines documenting journalism, commentary, and analysis from influential voices across politics, culture, economics, and global affairs.
On April 2, 2026, Coherent Digital acquired most of the assets of OpinionArchives. We’ll be working with Joe and Michelle to expand and grow the database—adding new technology, new features, new content—and, above all, to ensure that the magazines get the attention they deserve.
Why are you doing this?
The magazines in OpinionArchives are important social and cultural documents that should be used heavily by students and faculty in politics, culture, economics, environmental and global affairs, and other fields.
The OpinionArchives magazines and the reports in Coherent’s Policy Commons database are complementary. By bringing these resources together, we will introduce hundreds of thousands of Policy Commons users to the magazines. At the same time OpinionArchives readers will benefit from the materials in Policy Commons.
And by migrating the magazines to the Coherent Commons platform, we will give users cutting-edge features that enable new kinds of research and teaching—with minimal training, set-up, tracking, and administrative work for librarians.
What are the benefits of the Coherent platform for patrons and librarians?
We plan to develop a new version of OpinionArchives on our award-winning Commons platform. The many benefits for libraries and their patrons include:
Increased accessibility: Once migrated, OpinionArchives content will meet our Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT), which carries Level AA conformance with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0, 2.1, and 2.2 established by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
Expanded new content: We plan to add links to podcasts, videos, blogs, newsletters, and other high-currency, high-value commentary. We’re in the process of licensing new media from existing and new magazines of importance.
Research power: Researchers will be able to conduct new and extremely powerful searches and analyses. Our Advanced Search tool features NEAR operators, wildcard truncation, and keyword in context (KWIC). Our citation tools and permanent identifiers will allow the material to be quoted more easily and become part of research workflows.
A modern, mobile-responsive platform: Coherent Digital’splatform adapts seamlessly to various smartphones, tablets, and desktops, and to all browsers.
Multiple language support: The interface expands access to diverse users by offering content in multiple languages.
Unified cross-search: The magazine content will be seamlessly cross-searchable alongside other collections hosted on the Commons platform, expanding research possibilities and bringing diverse historical and contemporary sources together.
Dedicated customer portal: The portal will provide customers with access to information about magazine entitlements, MARC records, and usage data.
What are the benefits to magazine publishers?
This partnership will bring new functionality and a much larger academic audience to the magazines in OpinionArchives. It will result in more usage and will translate to higher sales and royalties. We plan to continue to deliver individual magazines, each with its own front-end, along with the option to cross-search the magazines.
Who will my contact be?
Joe Collins and Michelle Anciello will be working with Coherent for the foreseeable future. They’re ready to help answer your questions. Feel free to contact them at Joec@opinionarchives.com or Manciello@opinionarchives.com.
How will you migrate the magazines to the new platform?
To minimize any work for you or your patrons, we’ll conduct the migration in steps.
Initially, there will be no change to your existing authentication systems, syllabi links, MARC records, LibGuides, database lists, or other systems.
We’ll launch a beta version with a few close partners. When we’re sure that the existing links are redirected correctly and that there are no problems, we’ll carry over IP-authentications. Only when we’re certain that everything works the right way, we’ll launch the new platform formally and ask customers to switch over to the new system.
We’ll run both systems in parallel. After all customers have had a chance to switch to the new platform—and only then—we’ll discontinue the old system. Even after that, we expect all links to redirect, so no changes will be required in your LibGuides or other systems.
We’ll conduct training sessions. For the many customers who already use Coherent content, minimal or no training will be needed.
Will the current subscription rates remain in effect in 2026?
We're pleased to keep the current subscription rates in effect for 2026. Customers will enjoy enhanced services, including a cutting-edge platform, at the same great value.
Will one-time-purchase and subscription options be available?
Yes. We offer flexible pricing options tailored to your institution's needs. Please reach out to your Coherent account representative.
